DMI News & Views — Viewpoints — An insight into design management education in the UK: Lessons to be learned

A lot of people keep asking me what I want to do when I graduate from SCAD, and I keep saying the same thing: “I’m not exactly sure what I want to do yet, but I have a general idea. I want to have more of a leadership role in design and branch out to solve problems beyond just the realm of graphic design.”

For anyone who is curious, I found this great diagram that displays the many areas of design management, all encompassed, of course, by design thinking. The accompanying article examines design management education in the UK, particularly focusing on the dichotomy of the term design management and how that has created hurdles for the discipline in the past. Design Thinking: A Solution to Fracture-Critical Systems

Design thinking is practical. That’s its hallmark. It’s not ornamental at all. Design is fundamentally tied to producing something that’s useful. And that’s where the prototyping and the iterative process comes in. Design moves from thinking to making to thinking to making, in a continuous cycle.Design thinking is also about optimizing. Design is the process of creating solutions that address the greatest number of issues—with the least number of steps. It’s the elegant solution. “– Tom Fisher via DMI News & Views — Viewpoints — Design Thinking: A Solution to Fracture-Critical Systems

I really appreciate many aspects of this interview with Tom Fisher because it touches upon multiple subjects I have become passionate about recently. I am so tempted to quote almost everything he says in this post, but I’ll limit it to this one. I highly recommend reading the interview in its entirety to see the scope of problems design thinking has the potential to solve. Read More

What is this?

This blog is a place for me (Gretchen Chern) to gather all the articles, videos, interviews, books etc. that I find inspiring. I’m mainly doing this for myself, as I am soon venturing into the world of design management. The process by which I used to gather this information was to email myself interesting links, then leave the emails in my inbox for an unusually long period of time. Eventually I started posting links to my facebook page, which was slightly more efficient, but still lacking. That is why I am starting this blog. I need a way to collect and organize all my inspiration in one location where it is easily accessible.I’m still working on the look and functionality of this site as I am new to WordPress, but I’m anxious to get up and running. I have come across a lot of interesting things recently, so I am ready to start posting!
