Recycling in Savannah

How to Motivate People to Create Better Recycling Habits through Awareness, Education and Convenience

New Recycling Bin Design in Forsyth Park

Overview

For my final project in the Design Management program at SCAD, I wanted to take a closer look at recycling in Savannah, GA. The purpose of my study was to reveal a better way to encourage and enable recycling for Savannah residents, making it a habitual part of everyday life.

The first thing I did was to research the current state of recycling in Savannah. I then needed to learn what motivates people to change their habits. From this research, I discovered opportunities the City of Savannah may have to increase recycling efforts by implementing a new strategy and visual campaign.

After sending my research findings to the City of Savannah’s Recycling Coordinator, I was asked to join their board. Since I no longer live in Savannah, I was unfortunately unable to take up the position, but I continue to consult with the Recycling Coordinator through email and phone correspondence as the city expands recycling efforts.

The following is an overview of my research, the opportunities I found, and the design solutions that met these needs. If you want to learn even more, you can scroll to the bottom of this page and flip through my entire process book. Read More

Building a New Brand

Brand Brainstorm

Setting the Foundation

With my background in Graphic Design, I have designed visual identities for existing brands, but I’ve never had the opportunity to develop the framework for a new brand from the ground up. At SCAD, I was able to work with five other students from different disciplines in a sponsored collaborative design class to build a new brand for a national client.

The new brand we helped create will launch in early 2012. Three other classes at SCAD have been building off our research and brand foundation — an Industrial Design class created prototypes for the physical products that are part of the brand, a Service Design class worked on training/sales support and interaction design, and a Graphic/Interior Design class finalized the store design and brand standards manual. I can’t give away too much about the nature of the brand itself until after the launch, but I can discuss more about our process. Read More

Coca-Cola Packaging

16oz PET 4pk Carrier

16 oz PET 4 pk Carrier

I was asked to design graphics for a new 16oz 4pk carrier for the four core Coca-Cola brands. After receiving the die guide, I cut, folded and glued to create a full-size prototype that I could fit over four 16oz bottles. This allowed me to see exactly how the package would look before I started designing the graphics. It was discovered that the carrier awkwardly cut off the bottle graphics when it was lead brand color on brand color (red on red for Coke, green on green for Sprite, etc). Our design team’s solution was to create a two-tone design with the carrier so a different color would cut off the bottle logos. This also made the carriers more fun and interesting. I added bottle silhouettes to the tabs on the top of the carrier both to reinforce the brand identity in that area and to play off the four bottles in the pack. I created these photoshop renderings of the bottles in the carrier to show alongside the flat graphics so our client could visualize how the final product would look. Read More

Texting While Driving Infographic

Idea Visualization

The first phase of this research project involved collecting various statistics related to texting while driving. After recognizing patterns in the data, our team classified the information into semantically appropriate visual models that show relationships with multivariate data. These visual models were presented in a poster. Read More

Knowledge Sharing Network

Working Title Launch

Currently, Design Management is represented so inconsistently that there is both an opportunity and a need for Design Managers to define our field and chart a course for the profession. The development of a central network entity is the perfect way to allow Design Managers to share their knowledge, projects and experiences.

This forum of knowledge sourcing will serve practitioners and the curious alike, demonstrating credibility and relevance in the world of commerce. The network and its members will distinguish Design Management as a viable and unique profession that provides genuine success in its methodology and praxis. Read More
